When the Desert Breathes Again.

Reflections on stewardship, hospitality, and the places we love.

There is a nostalgic moment in Arizona that tells you everything is about to change each season.

It begins with the familiar scent of creosote carried on humid air. The light softens, the desert grows still, and then the wind arrives.

Towering clouds gather over the valley, while lightning stretches across the sky. All that was held within the clouds, pour out as the birth of an Arizona Monsoon begins.

For a few moments, there is only the storm. Then, almost as quickly as it came, the skies begin to clear.

What remains following the storm is both beauty and disorder.

The air is crisp with a fresh fragrance of creosote. The Saguaros drink deeply, while the sound of birds and nature begin to emerge again.

The Sonoran Desert reminds us that life returns after the storm.

For Arizona homeowners, monsoon season brings more than beauty. Powerful winds, flash flooding, lightning, blowing dust, prolonged heat, irrigation leaks, roof damage, fallen branches and power outages can all leave their mark.

Most are not emergencies, but they deserve someone's attention. A home doesn't stop living simply because its owners are away.

Whether you own a seasonal residence, vacation home, or spend part of the year away, thoughtful preparation before monsoon season and consistent care afterward can make all the difference.

Perhaps that's true in more places than the desert.

Life has seasons that test us. Yet, like the Sonoran Desert after a summer rain, renewal often begins one faithful day at a time, leaning into the embrace of the one true source of living water.

I've come to believe hospitality begins long before someone walks through the front door. It begins by preparing a place with care so it is ready to welcome the people who love it.

Every summer the desert weathers another season. Every summer it begins again.

And when the season changes once more, there is something deeply comforting about returning to a home that has weathered it well and standing ready to welcome you back.

Preparing Your Arizona Home for Monsoon Season

  • Schedule preventative A/C maintenance.
  • Check irrigation for leaks.
  • Secure outdoor furniture.
  • Inspect after storms or power outages.
  • Have someone you trust regularly check your home.

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?"
